The G Hotel Kelawai is a stylishly modern hotel in the business district of George Town. It offers guests a refined oasis in the heart of the bustle. Rooms are ultra modern, and have floor to ceiling windows to let in the light. They contain minibars, with free drinks and snacks, air conditioning and spacious work desks. The hotel is popular with business travellers, and has meeting rooms to accommodate any sized group. Reception is available 24 hours, and you can rent bicycles there to explore Penang. There is plenty of on-site parking for guests arriving by car. There are a number of bars and restaurants at the G Hotel Kelawai, including the outdoor Tree Bar, and the Miraku Restaurant for those looking for top quality Japanese cuisine. The hotel is just 200 yards from the popular Gurney Plaza, ideal for shopping, while Penang International airport is just 10 miles away.
A very large number of guests comment that the hotel's location, between two large shopping centres, was their favourite aspect of the hotel. They found it extremely convenient to shop, and then be able to retreat to their hotel oasis before they dropped.
All drinks and snacks in the minibar are free for guests to consume. Suffice to say, many were (pleasantly) shocked by this, and had rarely encountered it before. Some do go on to say that it consists mostly of soft drinks and a few chocolate bars, but they nevertheless appreciated the gesture.
Though not accessible to all guests, those in the executive suites raved about the view and atmosphere of the penthouse level executive lounge, saying it was definitely worth the extra cost of the executive rooms.
There were reports of renovations being carried out at the hotel as of early 2016. Though not mentioned by many, some guests did say that the work resulted in a lot of loud noise that was quite disturbing. Guests are advised to contact the hotel to find out the current status of the renovation project.
Though not that common, there are more than one or two reports of staff members being rude on check, or unprofessional and cold on other occasions. A few guests found that requests for assistance, or to remedy a problem they were experiencing, were ignored.
A surprising number of guests had bad taxi experiences when booking a taxi through the hotel to return to the airport. Sometimes the taxi would not turn up on time, or at all, causing much distress. There were also reports of over-charging.
