The building is just close by the famous Palace Poliziano where in the 1454 was born Angelo Ambrogini, commonly known by his nickname Il Poliziano, the famous Italian Classical scholar and poet of the Florentine Renaissance. The Colombi Palace was built in the 17th century and its name comes from a student, Cesare Colombi, where he was born in 1828, which as been one of the heroes of the battle of Curtatone in 1848, where he died fighting for the independence of Italy. In fact, during the period of "Risorgimento" Montepulciano hosted many famous revolutionary heroes among with Giuseppe Garibaldi, Giuseppe Mazzini and Silvio Pellico. One of Italy's most unusual sporting events is Bravio delle Botti, a centuries-old race taking place in the tiny village's stone streets on the last Sunday in August each year, with eight teams, known as "Contrade", competing to roll enormous empty wine barrels along the course in the quickest time possible. Each barrel is rolled by two 'springitori' (barrel rollers), representing a different district of the village.
