Situated in the midst of lovely countryside, but still very convenient for Menorca Airport, Agroturismo Matxani Gran is a lovely open guest house with a number of surprising amenities. The rooms have a distinct Spanish feel, and feature bold colours and lovely antique pieces. Each features en-suite bathroom, air conditioning, flat screen TV and in-room Wi-Fi access. Matchani takes its environmental responsibility seriously, and only uses green sources of electricity. All the facilities at the house are available for guests to use, from the barbeque to the jacuzzi. There is also a games room with pool table and other games. A traditional Spanish breakfast, making use of Menorcan ingredients, is available each morning. Later in the day a self service bar is open, so guests can pour themselves a drink and relax with friends. Menorca Airport is less than three miles from the guest house, while the nearest beach at Es Canutells is also about three miles away.
The hosts have clearly put a lot of thought into the breakfast they serve. Guests seemed to have taken note, and many mentioned that the breakfast out on the patio was a highlight of their day. The food was described as both tasty and varied.
For a couple of reasons it seems the owners are not actually on the property for much of the day. As a result they have set things up so guests have a free run of most of the facilities. Some found this impersonal, but others reckoned it created a relaxed homely feel. The bar, for example, is an honesty bar where guest simply right down what they have poured themselves.
A couple of guests mention that, while not within walking distance, the village of San Climent is nearby and has a couple of good restaurants, and even a casino.
A few guests mentioned that the TV's in the rooms get no English stations at all. Those who don't understand any Spanish can make up their own subtitles to Spanish programs on the fly. Great fun for all concerned, especially after a drink or two.
While it wasn't described as too severe, the fact is that the guest house is near the airport and does get some noise from the jets flying in and out. Some were a little disappointed that the otherwise peaceful atmosphere was regularly disturbed.
Guests report that the owner of the farm seems to have either other business interests, or employment, and once checked in they would not see a great deal of him. While he is contactable by phone, some missed having a reception.
